Monroe County is located in North East Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, which separates Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It has become quite a commuting HUB, thanks to its proximity to Route 80, New Jersey and New York. There are bus stations sprinkled throughout the area, to help commuters with their trip to the office and back. There is also a plan in place, and moving forward, to have train service.
We have four public school districts in Monroe County: East Stroudsburg Area School District, Stroudsburg School District, Pocono Mountain School District and Pleasant Valley School District. There are also Private and Montessori Schools, as well as higher education establishments, such as East Stroudsburg University. We have 16 townships and 4 boroughs within Monroe County, and the county seat resides in Stroudsburg.
The largest employers in Monroe County are Tobyhanna Army Depot, Walmart Distribution Center, Pocono Medical Center and Sanofi Pasteur, a manufacturer of vaccines.
Monroe County is a fast growing area, with the last census numbers showing nearly 139,000 people, and nearly 50,000 households. And with so much to do in the Pocono Mountains, no wonder it is growing so quickly! One of the greatest attributes of this area is the ability to enjoy all four distinct seasons. Spring is beautiful and blooming, Summer is warm and enjoyable, Autumn displays gorgeous foliage across the mountains and Winter gives us lots of snow to play in!
The Appalachian Trail runs right through Delaware Water Gap, perfect for hiking and trail running. The Delaware River flows along our eastern border, giving us swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, tubing and fishing. We also enjoy the winter here, boasting great ski resorts with skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. If you’re an outdoor person, we also have a few state parks right here, with lakes, picnic tables and playgrounds for the entire family to enjoy. The Poconos also hosts the NASCAR race twice a year at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond.
Not only do we like our outdoor activities here in the Poconos, but we also have a lot of retail and indoor activities to enjoy! Mt. Airy Casino has Monroe County's first slot machines! Many people from all over are enjoying the slots, the entertainment, and the delicious meals offered at Mt. Airy. The Crossing Premium Outlets are also a big draw (and we have no sales tax on clothing in Pennsylvania!), we have the Stroud Mall, and the entire strip on Route 611 from the Stroud Mall to the Crossing Outlets has become quite the retail road! Besides the shopping, you can enjoy movie theaters, a local independent cinema, a fine arts theater and bowling alleys, just to name a few. The restaurant chains have also been building here, and in addition the chains, there are a lot of great meals to be enjoyed at our locally owned independent restaurants.
